This message is possibly worth $10,000 to me. I need your help.

I am happy to announce that your votes helped me get to the final round of the FameCast competition. As one of the five finalists, I was flown to Austin (where Iâm currently typing this email) and performed a 12-minute set of poetry at Antoneâs, one of the cityâs most popular venues. Iâm writing you for three reasons:

1) You can check out the video footage of me performing my set by going to www.FameCast.com, clicking on stage 9 (the spoken word stage), and clicking on my name and picture. I think most of you will really enjoy the video. This is TOTALLY UNLIKE any of the cheaply made videos Iâve made in the past. This is professional (and I donât mean in a hooker kind of way.) I did a piece that makes fun of Paris Hiltonâs incarceration, a poem about my fatherâs Alzheimerâs-related death, the ribbon magnet piece, and a poem about disease. Unlike the previous videos, the finals video quality is amazing. I also encourage you to check out videos from the other four finalists, including Da Boogie Man, Corbet Dean, Anis, and Talaam Acey.

2) Iâd really appreciate your vote. The five finalists will be battling it out this week online to see who gets the most votes for their video. If I win the competition, Iâll be awarded $10,000! If youâve already registered on the site, voting, as you already know, takes a few seconds. Hey All, Thanks for the emails and love. FatC is temporarily on hold. I don't have the energy to come up with bits and entertain. I want to continue ranting but I don't want to be constrained by expectations. In the spirit of expectationless ranting, I've set up an audio blog that can be found at: http://raganomics.podshow.com/ Don't expect Fox and the City. It's an audio blog, not an audio sitcom and variety show. I don't know exactly what format I'm aiming for. I know that I want to feature background music that moves me. Hello, I am happy to announce that Fox and the City was nominated for a Peopleâs Choice Podcast Award. Specifically, the program was nominated for âBest GLBT Podcast.â? I am thrilled about the nomination for a number of reasons. First, iTunes continues to deny queer podcasters a category that makes it easy for listeners to find content relevant to the GLBTQ community. This attitude is echoed in the actions of PodCastAlley, who, to date and despite the support of several queer casters, has never featured a gay themed podcast or video cast. Some might argue that queer categories promote a form of segregation, something akin to âseparate but equal.â? While I understand the logic behind this sentiment, I believe that podcasts serve a unique function in the gay community. Members of the GLBTQ rarely see or hear mass mediated depictions of gay life that come from members of the queer community. Gay voices made public on podcasts promote a sense of shared discernment among queer people, many of whom are invested in seeing themselves in the media. I am happy to see the Peopleâs Choice Podcast Awards acknowledge the unique contributions of LGBTQ podcasters. It would, however, be insincere of me not to mention the notable absence of lesbians and transgendered people nominated in the GLBT category. I am also tickled by the nomination because Iâve invested 100s of hours of work into making Fox and the City a consistently funny and thought provoking podcast. Many people have flippant attitudes about awards. I am not one of those people. Few people are paid to podcast. Most produce shows for the love of it. Recognition doesnât hurt in a digital world where disconnection and displacement rule the day. I appreciate all the people who nominated the show and who plan to vote for it. Dearest Listeners, After much thought and trepidation, Iâve decided to take a long break from FatC. Because FatC fans rock in so many ways, I canât leave without explaining my departure. First, I believe Iâve been creatively âspentâ? for months. As painful and shameful as it is for me to admit, Iâm uninspired. When I entered this sordid world, I had so much to say. Times change. Iâve lost my voice. Every podcaster enacts a persona. I fear the personality I created has taken on a life of its own. Itâs stupid. I find myself saying things people expect me to say. Iâm a slave to the formula, and, frankly, I donât want to be that guy. I owe so much to this medium. Iâve made some terrific friends. Madge, Wanda, Mike, John, the folks at Rainbow Pod Squad, Puffy, Steve, Omar, Brad, Chemda, Patrice, and the boys at the PNS Explosion, among countless others, have taught me so much about art, activism, and hell, life. I had no idea that my involvement in this world would result in an assortment of new friends, a dissertation, thousands of hours of performance, and a new life outlook. I applaud everyone who has taken the time to listen to FatC, agree with my words, and dissent with my madness. I think everyone involved in the queer podcasting project feels connected to something bigger and more profound than words. Love or hate, agree or disagree, we belong to a community that cares: We care about world events; we care about what other people say; we care about this technology and mode of communication. It would be insincere of me to depart without talking about the most profound moment I experienced as a member of this community. When Juan died, I knew I had to be at Richardâs side. For the record, Richard and Brad are two of the most professional and kind people Iâve had the privilege to work alongside. Rachel and I appreciate the gift you provided in ways that weâll never be able to fully express. Juanâs death proved to me that podcasting is more than free entertainment, self-involvement, ego-mania, etc. Podcasters and their supporters forge intimate, real, and profound connections. That said, Iâll continue to participate in ETHS but Iâll strive to participate in a manner that better articulates who I am outside of the podcasting world. Being a mean, crass relentless bottom (v. 2.0) is harder than youâd think. As I previously indicated, Iâm tired of the persona taking control; Iâm tired of talking shit to and about people I respect and admire.
